Why this number can be trusted
The votes live on the server
They are not kept in your browser and cannot be inflated from the console: the count you see is the one in the database.
One vote per person
Each vote is tied to a combination of cookie and browser fingerprint. If you clear cookies and try to vote again, the system notices.
IP only stops floods
Because many neighbours share the building wifi and come out on the same public IP, the IP is never used to identify you: it only limits bursts of automated votes.
You can change your mind
If your view changes, vote again: yours is updated rather than a new one added. Each profile is voted on separately.
